After the liberation of Ramadi in the western province of Anbar last week, the first mass grave has been discovered in the provincial capital city.
A source from Anbar police said that relying on military intelligence and surveillance information, police forces could spot the location of a mass grave in the centre of Ramadi.
Total of 40 bodies have been recovered from the location. According to the initial investigations, the victims are all civilians from Ramadi, killed by the ISIS.
The source added that they have identified several more mass graves in the city, but the exhumation phase will start once the area is fully secured.
After overrunning Ramadi to expand their territories from Northern Iraq down to the South-West in May 2015, ISIS militants killed a large number of civilians and forced thousands to flee the area.
Iraqi security forces liberated the city after seven months of occupation on December 28, 2015.
